Improving documentation discoverability and navigation for a complex B2B technical knowledge graph platform.
TL;DR
As part of my Master’s capstone, my team & I are redesigning Stardog's documentation experience to improve discoverability, scannability, and usability across user roles.

This project is ongoing, with current work focused on information architecture, navigation and intent-aware search, UI consistency, and AI implementation.
THE PROBLEM
Stardog’s docs contain valuable technical information, but users can struggle to quickly locate what they need.
This was revealed through user interviews, a survey, and usability testing with both internal & external users of Stardog's docs.

Dense pages and long-form content, inconsistent hierarchy and formatting, and navigation that isn’t tailored to different user goals increase friction for both new and experienced users.
MY ROLE ・ UX / PRODUCT DESIGNER
I’m leading the redesign from research to prototype, working closely with stakeholders to validate improvements and prioritize the most impactful changes.
OUR GOALS
Improve content findability
Create a clearer, more consistent documentation structure
Support different user roles & technical expertise
Increase readability and reduce cognitive load
OUR PROCESS (SO FAR)
User Research
Reviewed current docs structure and page templates
Identified repeated pain points (deep nesting, unclear hierarchy, dense pages) through user interviews, surveys, and usability testing
Analyzed competitor documentation sites for best practices

Low-fidelity Design Iterations
Collaborating with my team to create low-fidelity visuals of our design ideas
Iterating based on team critiques and stakeholder feedback

IA + Content Audit
Conducted audits of the current information architecture and content
Used findings to ideate preliminary design ideas

MY DESIGN DIRECTION #1
Role-Based Navigation + Learning Paths
This is one of my early design focuses for this project. It aims to reduce cognitive load by letting users choose a context that matches their goals, then tailoring the documentation experience to that context.

Still in its early stages, it explores a possibility for personalization within the docs to support specific types of users in their typical workflows.
Each type of user has a 'hub' which holds relevant learning paths for the various tasks they might need to complete.
More iterations to come!
WHATS NEXT?
We have just begun the design phase of our process — moving from user research and synthesis to sketching & wireframing.
Over the next couple months, we will be progressively ideating and iterating on our designs, utilizing team critiques, client feedback, and user testing.
